AVA BROSNAN

“INVITATION”

This photographic work represents the people, land, and craft techniques that inform my artistic process and daily life. Heritage crafts are political, relying on strong community ties and active participation to keep them alive. These techniques rely on the land for harvesting materials, respect for the environment, and generational tactile learning. This work uses quilting and Celtic knots to abstract the images of land and people, touching on the separation of modern life from naturalistic routines and practices. While exploring my relationship to the intersection of identity and craft, I also aim to celebrate the artists and laborers whose work has been dismissed and underrepresented globally.

I also found influence in Victorian photo albums, calling cards, letters, and mourning art that ties in the themes of family, loss, and tangible love. With the intention of making a sentimental object of desire, I hope there is inspiration for the viewers to create, reconnect, and take an active role in the survival of traditional crafts.
